Nicole Nelson opened her first Onyx Salon and Spa in May 2007 in Coon Rapids.

The Ramsey woman from Fargo built her business on the notion that people want hair stylists with experience and with a passion for their craft and the people

they serve.

It worked, and now she’s hoping to apply that same philosophy in Ramsey at her second Onyx Salon and Spa.

“I want to copy the business plan I had in Coon Rapids,” she said.

Times have changed since she opened her first location, and the starting line is in a different spot because of the economy.

“When I opened the first one all my chairs were full,” she said, noting she has a way to go to have all her chairs rented out. “This will be a little harder.”

She remains focused on pulling together an experienced and passionate group of stylists to carry out her plans for a trendy, forward-thinking salon.

She has already teamed up with Lyndsay Bertie to include a DermaDolce Med Spa in order to offer clients Botox injections, dermal fillers, chemical peels and facials.

DermaDolce will do for the skin what typical salons do for hair, nails and tired and stressed  muscles. Onyx also offers manicures, pedicures and massage therapy.

Bertie owns and will manage DermaDolce. She has recruited her father, Rick Bertie, a doctor at Allina Medical Clinic in Coon Rapids, as well as a Anne Slama, a  registered nurse and Tiffany Schwag, an aesthetician.

Bertie says the exciting thing is bringing such services to the Ramsey area so people don’t have to go to Minneapolis.

“It’s nice for people to have something in their backyard, something they can access over their lunch hour,” she said. “These treatments don’t require down time.”

DermaDolce is also offering evening parties where manicures, pedicures and skin care can be done during an evening of fun.

It’s the kind of cutting-edge services Nelson wants to be part of her salon.

Nelson jumped into cosmetology school right after high school and became a stylist. It wasn’t her plan to become an owner, but after a few years and sizing up the competition she decided clients could be offered something more.

She was right about that with her first salon. Now, she is working to prove she’s right again, but this time it’s in her own backyard.
