Dysport Injections for Moderate to Severe Lines
As you age, your unique facial expressions can cause some not-so-unique lines between your eyebrows. Frowning, squinting, and even your genetics all play roles in determining whether you’ll develop these prominent little wrinkles. And while aging is a fact of life, living with wrinkles most certainly is not.
When it comes to injectables, Botox is typically the first thought on most people’s minds—and for good reason. Botox is highly effective at smoothing age-related lines and wrinkles; however, the newer injectable on the block, Dysport, is a comparable choice.
Dysport Versus Botox
Both Dysport and Botox utilize the same active ingredient, Botulinum toxin type A. This purified neurotoxin works to temporarily halt muscle contractions by blocking nerve impulses to the facial muscles. Both Dysport and Botox are FDA-approved prescription injections, widely considered safe due to the minuscule amount required for cosmetic purposes. Differences between the two lie in their effectiveness and staying power.
- Dysport Target Areas: specifically targets the vertical lines that form between your brows. These lines, commonly referred to as glabellar lines, become more severe as your skin loses elasticity. However, Dysport is only recommended for moderate to severe glabellar lines, not mild wrinkles. You can expect to see results from Dysport injections within as little as 24 hours.
- Botox Target Areas: Botox, on the other hand, is indicated for the treatment of mild, moderate, and severe lines, but typically excels at masking horizontal line development. While Botox is highly effective against horizontal lines, it is widely used to soften vertical lines, as well. Many aesthetic practitioners find that Botox has a higher potency to volume ratio than Dysport, meaning Botox requires fewer units to achieve the same aesthetic effect. Patients also report that while results from Dysport injections tend to appear slightly faster, Botox delivers longer-lasting results.
How Does Dysport Work?
Dysport works to smooth moderate to severe frown lines by temporarily paralyzing the muscles between your brows. Its active ingredient, Botulinum toxin type A, blocks the release of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter responsible for activating muscle contractions. As your muscles relax, you’ll notice those furrows between your brows gently fade away.
- During the Procedure: Your aesthetic specialist will inject a small amount of solution directly into the muscles between your eyebrows. To prevent any discomfort during the procedure, your specialist may apply a small amount of topical anesthetic. You may feel a slight pressure as the solution enters the muscle, but overall, Dysport injections are relatively painless. The entire treatment process typically takes less than 30 minutes, and you can return to your day immediately.
- After the Procedure: To see the most significant benefit from Dysport injections, we recommend you avoid strenuous physical activity for 24-48 hours after treatment. You should also avoid lying flat for at least 4 hours after the procedure. Be sure to avoid rubbing or massaging the treatment area for at least 24 hours, as doing so can alter your results.
Dysport Candidates
Almost anyone with moderate to severe frown lines is a good candidate for Dysport. However, the treatment is only recommended for individuals under the age of 65. Those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who have an active infection at or near the injection site should avoid using neuromodulators like Dysport.
If you are allergic to cow’s milk protein, or any of the ingredients in Dysport, our aesthetic specialists can help you select a treatment option that better fits your unique needs. Individuals who suffer from nerve or muscle conditions such as ALS, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, or myasthenia gravis should avoid Dysport, as serious allergic reactions have been reported.
